What is the history of Hailey’s Book Club?

In a family gathering on Mother’s Day, 2006, Hailey’s Book Club was formed. On June, 2006 Hailey’s Book Club, Inc. was registered with the Arizona Corporation Commission. We were extended a warm welcome by Canyon Elementary School’s Principal and Librarian, Mrs. Neils and Mrs. Hendrix, to roll out our program to provide both new books to Canyon’s library, and a perpetual memorial to Hailey, through the dedication of the new books. They supported us beyond our expectations, setting aside a special reading area for our program. Mrs. Meadows, Canyon’s Art teacher, offered her talent to paint a beautiful garden mural, including a sign reading “Hailey’s Place”. The book club purchased a rolling ladybug bookshelf and garden themed carpet for the reading center, where the donated books are displayed and made available to the students to check-out.

Where does my donation go?

100% of your donation supports literary programs. For every $25 donation, one book is ordered for dedication as you have specified. Of the $25, $5 is placed in the operating account, which supports the expenses of our operation (eg: bookplate supplies & printing, recognition strap, fliers, bookmarks for the students, operating fees, etc.) The remaining $20 is placed in a special library fund account, from which your book is purchased. The balances remaining in the library fund account, after ordered books are purchased, are designated to be used to support the greatest needs of your school’s library. With these funds, your librarian will request additional books, or other needed library supplies. Any balances remaining in the operating account, at the end of our fiscal year will be donated to support a library or literary program within Peoria Unified School District. This year end donation will be decided based on recommendations from PUSD staff members. Clearly, a portion your donation will even reach beyond your student’s school, perhaps to help a less fortunate school build their library.

May I make a donation, without requesting a book dedication?

Absolutely. Please complete our Order Form, indicating “donation only”(no personalized book dedication). You may specify the school that you wish to receive benefit of your donation. Your donation will be added to the school’s library fund account and spent as directed by the librarian.

Which schools is Hailey's Book Club currently supporting?

March 7, 2008 is the launch of Hailey’s Book Club website, and the convenience to place a book order with dedication bookplate online. This truly marks the beginning of our efforts to make our program available to all students. We are currently piloting this program at Canyon Elementary and Vistancia Elementary, with a vision to expand our program to all 30 elementary schools within Peoria Unified School District in the very near future.

What is the "recognition strap"?

The “recognition strap” is a band, strapped around the front cover of the book, which provides:

  • Name of student/teacher being recognized
  • The reason (eg: Birthday) for recognition
  • From whom the book was donated
  • The month the book will remain in the library "on display only"

During the “display only” month, the book will be placed on a designated bookshelf, easily visible, where your student will be proud to see it. The librarian may lend it to your student’s teacher for a special recognition day, during which the teacher may read it, or review it with the students. It will remain on display, until the following month when it is integrated with books available for check-out. Once the book is removed from “display only”, the student will receive the “recognition strap” as a keepsake for his special book donation.

May I order any book from the recommended book list?

Yes. The interest level categories are to be used as a tool to guide you to a selection of books that might be appropriate for your child’s current reading level. However, feel free to review other reading levels, where perhaps you will find a preferred book for dedication.

May I request a special order book, not listed on the recommended book list?

Yes. Should your student have a favorite book, or should you know of a book title & author that is appropriate to dedicate to someone special, you may complete the “special order” information on the order form. We will search for the book, and let you know if we are unable to locate it, or if the book’s delivery will be delayed.

After completing my book order, what’s next?

Hailey’s Book Club will order the book from our supplier and process your payment. Your payment must be received no later than the 10th of the month, to guarantee the delivery of your book by the 1st of the following month. Once your ordered book is received, we will print the bookplate dedication to your specifications & print the “recognition strap”. We will permanently attach and laminate the bookplate to the inside cover of the book, attach the temporary “recognition strap” and attach a permanent Hailey’s Book Club sticker to the outside spine of the book. The book will be delivered to your school, cataloged and prepared for dedication on the 1st of the following month. Your school’s librarian will notify your student’s teacher of the donation, and make the book available to the teacher by the 1st of the month to recognize your student for the gift, and perhaps read the book to the classroom.

May I request a specific book, books by a favorite author or a favorite series be added to the recommended book list?

Yes. Please make any special requests directly to your school’s librarian. She will consider your request when she supplies her new recommended list monthly, which will replace the books on the list that have been previously ordered and removed.
